How to apply for the Chinese Trade Unions Silk Road Scholarship: agency number 00009 and the form entries

Sources checked · Unofficial summary

According to the China Scholarship Council page for the Chinese Trade Unions Silk Road Scholarship, the application is made online in CGSIS (Chinese Government Scholarship Information System): you choose "Type A" as the Program Category, type 00009 as the Agency Number, fill in the form with the entries the notice prescribes, and upload the listed documents. If those two entries are wrong, the notice says you cannot continue the online application or your application will not be accepted. Everything the notice requires is set out below, in the order it gives.

The documents you have to prepare

Prepare the documents first, then upload clear scanned copies of each one. The notice lists seven:

  1. Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship, in Chinese or English.
  2. Notarized highest diploma. Documents in a language other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized Chinese or English translations.
  3. Academic transcripts, with the same translation rule.
  4. A Study Plan or Research Proposal, written in Chinese or English, minimum 500 words.
  5. Valid documents of your legal guardians in China — only for applicants under the age of 18.
  6. Foreigner Physical Examination Form, written in English — only for applicants planning to stay in China for more than 6 months. The form can be downloaded from http://www.csc.edu.cn/studyinchina or http://www.campuschina.org. The examination must cover every item listed on the form; a form is invalid if it is incomplete, or missing the attending physician's signature, the hospital's official stamp, or a sealed photograph of the applicant. The result is valid for only 6 months, so the notice asks you to plan the examination schedule accordingly.
  7. A resume or CV covering educational background and working experience after high school, uploaded to "Other Supporting Documents" in CGSIS.

The notice adds one instruction covering all of them: provide authentic and valid documents as requested and upload clear scanned copies onto CGSIS, because failure to fulfil the requirements "will negatively influence the scholarship results".

The online steps, in order

Step 1 — Prepare the application documents according to the list above.

Step 2 — Visit the "CSC Study in China" website and click "Scholarship Application for Students" at http://www.csc.edu.cn/studyinchina or http://www.campuschina.org.

Step 3 — Choose "Type A" for "Program Category". Type in 00009 as the "Agency Number" for the CTUSRS programme. The name of the authority is then displayed automatically on the page. Check both entries; the notice says an incorrect entry blocks the rest of the application or causes it not to be accepted.

Step 4 — Fill in the Online Application Form and upload the supporting documents accurately and in their entirety, following the steps listed on the left of the page. Use the entries given below for the "Language Proficiency and Study Plan" section.

Step 5 — Check each part of the application before submission. Click "Submit". The submitted documents are the only reference the applied universities have for confirming admission.

Step 6 — To make changes, click "Withdraw and Edit" at the top of the page. Click "Submit" again when you have finished. If you do not resubmit, the notice says the retrieved application becomes invalid and the new one will not be received either. Once the application is under formal review by the CSC and the universities, you cannot withdraw or edit it.

Step 7 — Click "Print the Application Form" to download the completed form.

The exact entries for "Language Proficiency and Study Plan"

Field Enter
Apply As General Scholar
Preferred Teaching Language Chinese
Discipline Applying For Literature
Major Applying For Chinese Language
Preferences of Institute I Beijing Language and Culture University
Preferences of Institute II None
Preferences of Institute III None
Duration of Major Study 1st September of current year to 15th July of the following year

Institutes II and III are set to "None" because, as the notice states, the programme is undertaken in one university only. The page gives no academic year, so the duration of study is stated in that relative form rather than as two calendar dates.

Practical notes from the notice

  • Use Firefox or Internet Explorer (11.0). The notice says menu selection functions may not work in other browsers.
  • Only Chinese and English are accepted for the online application.
  • Fill in "Current Contact Information" in CGSIS accurately, in detail and with valid details, so that admission documents can be mailed to candidates accurately and on time.

What the notice does not say

The page gives no application deadline. It also gives no academic year for the cycle it describes.

It does not say which trade union body nominates or forwards candidates. The application route it describes runs through CGSIS with agency number 00009, but the notice does not name the body behind that number or describe any nomination step before the online application.

One further point of wording: the page's "Tips for Coming to China" section refers to "ACYLS winners" in its first sentence, although the page itself covers the Silk Road scholarship. That is the wording as it appears on the page; it does not add a requirement to the application.

Questions people ask

Is there an application deadline?

The official page does not give one. No deadline date appears anywhere in the notice, so no date can be quoted from it.

Who nominates applicants for this scholarship?

The notice does not say. It prescribes the agency number 00009 for use in CGSIS but names no trade union body as the nominating or forwarding authority.

Which browser should I use for CGSIS?

The notice says to use Firefox or Internet Explorer (11.0), and warns that menu selection functions may not work in other browsers.

Can I change my application after submitting it?

Yes, until formal review begins. Click "Withdraw and Edit" at the top of the page, make the changes, then click "Submit" again. After the CSC and the universities have started formal review, the notice says the applicant cannot withdraw or edit it.

Where do I upload my CV?

Into "Other Supporting Documents" in CGSIS. The CV should cover your educational background and working experience after high school.

Is the Foreigner Physical Examination Form required for everyone?

No. The notice requires it only for applicants planning to stay in China for more than 6 months. The form is written in English and the result is valid for only 6 months.

How do I enter the duration of study?

As "1st September of current year to 15th July of the following year". The notice gives no academic year, so the field is stated in that relative form.
