Chinese Government Scholarship for Mongolian students: the 2026/2027 embassy announcement and the Inner Mongolia track
Sources checked · Unofficial summary
The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Mongolia announced 220 Chinese Government Scholarship places for Mongolian citizens for the 2026/2027 academic year: 138 for students already studying in China and 82 planned new admissions, split into 46 undergraduates and 36 master's, doctoral, general scholar and senior scholar students. Applications for that cycle were accepted from 10 November 2025 to 1 February 2026 through www.campuschina.org, followed by a written examination and interview run by the embassy. A separate announcement from the same embassy covers a different award, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Government Scholarship, with 260 places.
The places in the embassy announcement
The announcement, dated 5 November 2025 and posted on the embassy site on 13 November 2025, states that 220 scholarships were provided to the Mongolian government for 2026/2027. Of those, 138 went to students already studying in China, and 82 new students were planned for admission.
The 82 are described only as 46 undergraduates and 36 master's, doctoral, general and advanced (senior scholar) students. The announcement does not break the 36 down any further by level.
Who could apply
All applicants had to be citizens of Mongolia and in good mental and physical health. The age and degree thresholds depended on the level applied for:
| Level | Qualification required | Age |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate | High school graduate | Under 25 |
| Master's | Bachelor's degree holder | Under 35 |
| Doctoral | Master's degree holder | Under 40 |
| General scholar | High school graduate or above | Under 45 |
| Senior scholar | Master's degree holder, or associate professor or above | Under 50 |
For Chinese-taught programmes, the announcement required HSK Level 4 for master's and doctoral study, HSK Level 3 for senior scholar programmes, and HSK Level 3 for general scholar programmes, with those studying the Chinese language exempted. Two further exemptions are stated: applicants coming to China to study Chinese under a general scholar programme did not need to reach those levels, and applicants who had already obtained a degree from a Chinese university taught in Chinese did not need to provide the relevant language documents.
From the 2026/2027 academic year, bachelor's applicants had to take the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) and upload a valid score report. The announcement refers readers to www.csca.cn for details and registration, and states that applicants intending to enrol in September 2026 had to sit the CSCA on 21 December 2025 or 25 January 2026.
Three further conditions applied to how applicants chose universities. They had to examine the universities they intended to apply to, select their targets carefully, and fill in the application information accurately. They had to contact the admissions offices of those universities in advance and obtain an admission notice or invitation letter before submitting the scholarship application. And they had to meet each university's own requirements for academic ability, language proficiency and other criteria. Applicants not admitted to their preferred universities were not considered for admission adjustments.
The announcement also states that Chinese Government Scholarship recipients may not simultaneously hold other scholarships established by the Chinese government at any level or by the admitting institution, excluding one-time awards. If a conflict is found, eligibility is revoked and all scholarship funds already received must be returned; deliberate concealment of funding brings disqualification plus a three-year bar on applying for the scholarship.
How the application was made
The announcement directs applicants to register on www.campuschina.org and submit all application materials there, with the requirements published on that site and detailed instructions in its appendix, the Instructions for Chinese Government Scholarship Information System (CGSIS) for Applicants. It gives no agency number and does not ask applicants to send paper copies anywhere.
The required documents were:
| Document | What the announcement requires |
|---|---|
| Application form | Chinese Government Scholarship application form, in Chinese or English |
| Passport home page | Clear scanned copy of the ordinary passport information page; renew the passport if its validity is under 12 months from the expected start date |
| Notarized highest diploma | Prospective graduates submit official proof of student status; documents in other languages need notarized Chinese or English translations |
| Academic transcripts | Transcripts in other languages need notarized Chinese or English translations |
| Language qualification certificates | Valid HSK report for Chinese-taught master's, doctoral, general scholar and senior scholar programmes; IELTS, TOEFL or similar per university requirements for other languages |
| CSCA score report | Bachelor's applicants must sit the test before the application deadline and upload a valid report |
| Pre-admission documents | Pre-admission notice from the university's international student admissions department, or an invitation letter from a school or professor |
| Study plan or research proposal | In Chinese or English; minimum 200 words for undergraduates, 500 for non-degree students, 800 for postgraduates |
| Recommendation letters | Two letters in Chinese or English from professors or associate professors, for graduate and senior scholar programmes |
| Example of art | Own works for art or design majors, uploaded in the system or sent to the university directly |
| Guardian documents | Required for applicants under 18 |
| Foreigner Physical Examination Form | Photocopy in English for stays over six months; valid for six months, complete, signed, stamped and with a sealed photograph |
| Non-criminal record report | Issued by the local public security authority, usually within six months before submission |
Two reminders are attached to the list: materials in languages other than Chinese or English must come with English translations, and uploaded documents must be clear, authentic and valid, with applicants bearing the consequences of unclear scans.
After reviewing the files, the embassy notified applicants of the examination arrangements by email. Applicants whose materials did not meet the requirements were not given an examination opportunity, which is why the announcement asks applicants to supply valid contact details.
The dates of that cycle, and what comes next
The application window for this announcement was 10 November 2025 to 1 February 2026, and the CSCA dates given for September 2026 enrolment were 21 December 2025 and 25 January 2026. Those dates belong to the 2026/2027 intake and have passed. When this page was checked on 10 October 2026, no announcement for a later intake had been published on the embassy page that carried this one.
The next announcement for this programme will come from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Mongolia. Its dates have not been published, and the places, levels and requirements should not be assumed to repeat.
A separate award: the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Government Scholarship
The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Government Scholarship is a different scholarship from the Chinese Government Scholarship. It is funded by the Inner Mongolia regional government, it has its own places, and it runs through its own application system.
The embassy notice for the 2026/2027 academic year, published on 8 May 2026, states that the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region government provided 260 places to the Mongolian government: 200 undergraduates, 40 master's students and 20 doctoral students.
Applications had to be made through the "Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region International Student Information System" at isms.imu.edu.cn. The notice describes the sequence as follows:
- Log in to the system and submit your application information.
- Inner Mongolia institutions review the materials through the system.
- Institutions push the information of undergraduate applicants who pass that review to Mongolia's Ministry of Education.
- The Ministry of Education confirms application eligibility in the system and pushes it to the Inner Mongolia Department of Education and to the institutions.
- The Inner Mongolia Department of Education allocates admission places to the institutions.
- The institutions carry out the assessment and admit students.
Mongolia's Ministry of Education therefore has a defined role in this programme: it confirms the eligibility of undergraduate applicants inside the system, after the institutions' first review and before the places are allocated. The notice adds that Mongolia's Ministry of Education published the same announcement, and that applicants who want more detail can contact that ministry.
This notice is shorter than the Chinese Government Scholarship announcement and stays silent on several points. It does not state eligibility criteria, age limits or language requirements; it does not list application documents; it does not say what the scholarship covers; and it gives no opening or closing date for applications. It is a notice for one intake, 2026/2027, and its dates have passed. Any further notice would come from the same embassy, and for this programme Mongolia's Ministry of Education has published it as well; no dates should be assumed in advance.
Questions people ask
How many places did Mongolia receive for 2026/2027?
The embassy's Chinese Government Scholarship announcement states 220 places, made up of 138 students already studying in China and 82 new admissions. The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Government Scholarship notice, a separate award, states 260 places: 200 undergraduate, 40 master's and 20 doctoral.
Is the Inner Mongolia scholarship part of the Chinese Government Scholarship?
No. The two notices describe two different scholarships with different funders, different place numbers and different application systems. Places under one are not places under the other.
Where were applications submitted?
The Chinese Government Scholarship announcement directs applicants to www.campuschina.org. The Inner Mongolia notice directs applicants to the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region International Student Information System at isms.imu.edu.cn, with eligibility confirmation by Mongolia's Ministry of Education inside that system.
Does either notice say what the scholarship covers?
Neither notice states this. The embassy's Chinese Government Scholarship announcement lists documents, eligibility and procedure but does not describe tuition, accommodation, stipend or insurance, and the Inner Mongolia notice does not describe coverage either.
When will the next announcement be published?
The embassy had not published one on the page carrying the 2026/2027 announcement when this page was checked on 10 October 2026. The next announcement will come from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Mongolia; no dates can be given until it appears.
