What the Chinese Government Scholarship pays: tuition, housing, stipend and insurance
Sources checked · Unofficial summary
The official guide lists four items of coverage for the Chinese Government Scholarship: tuition fees, a free university dormitory or an accommodation subsidy, a monthly stipend, and comprehensive medical insurance. The stipend is CNY 2,500, CNY 3,000 or CNY 3,500 a month, depending on the level you study at.
The four items
| Item | What the guide states |
|---|---|
| Tuition | Tuition fees |
| Housing | Free university dormitory or accommodation subsidy |
| Stipend | Paid monthly; the amount depends on study level (next table) |
| Medical insurance | Comprehensive medical insurance: CNY 800 per person per year, or CNY 400 per person for programmes lasting less than six months |
Monthly stipend by study level
| Study level | Stipend |
|---|---|
| Undergraduates | CNY 2,500 per month |
| Master's students and general scholars | CNY 3,000 per month |
| Doctoral students and senior scholars | CNY 3,500 per month |
How long the scholarship lasts
The guide says the scholarship covers both major study and Chinese language (preparatory) study. Language courses last one year. For major study, the scholarship runs for the length the programme requires.
What the guide does not mention
The guide's coverage section lists only the four items above. It says nothing about international airfare or a settlement allowance for the main Chinese Government Scholarship routes. Some other scholarships listed by the CSC do state them. The ASEAN-China Young Leaders Scholarship guidebook, for example, lists round-trip international airfare and a one-time settlement fee of RMB 3,000. Read the notice for the scholarship you are applying to rather than assuming one programme's terms apply to another.
Questions people ask
Is the accommodation subsidy a fixed amount?
The guide does not give a figure. It says only "free university dormitory or accommodation subsidy". Ask the university for the arrangement it uses.
Do general scholars and master's students get the same stipend?
Yes. The guide groups master's students with general scholars at CNY 3,000 per month, and doctoral students with senior scholars at CNY 3,500 per month.
Does the stipend differ between the Bilateral Program and the University Program?
The guide gives one coverage section for all its routes and does not set different amounts by route.
