Age limits across China scholarships: each programme's cut-off in one table
Sources checked · Unofficial summary
Usually not — the age ceilings in these programmes are higher than most applicants expect. Most of the scholarship notices published by the China Scholarship Council stop at 45, and two categories allow applicants under 50. The tight limits sit on degree study under the Chinese Government Scholarship, whose guide requires bachelor's applicants to be under 25, master's applicants under 35 and doctoral applicants under 40.
The age limits, notice by notice
The table below keeps each notice's own wording. Where a notice states no age for a category, the cell says so rather than borrowing a figure from another programme.

Why the degree routes are tighter
The Chinese Government Scholarship guide scales the age limit to the level of study: 25 for a bachelor's place, 35 for a master's, 40 for a doctorate. Its two scholar categories run the other way — a general scholar needs only a high school diploma (or higher) and must be under 45, while a senior scholar must be a master's degree holder or an associate professor (or above) and under 50.
The China Link notice uses the same two-tier shape for a short exchange: under 45 for general scholars, who are current undergraduates or graduates, and under 50 for senior scholars, who are current PhD candidates or faculty.
The International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship is the only one of these documents that sets a lower bound as well as an upper one — 16 — and it pulls its bachelor's route back to 25.
The only fixed reference date: 1 September 2025
Of all the notices compared here, only the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship guidelines measure age against a calendar date: applicants must be "aged between 16 and 35 years on September 1, 2025". That date belongs to the 2025 cycle. The guidelines are dated January 2025 and were written for programmes starting between July 2025 and March 2026; those dates have passed. When the page was checked, it was the most recent edition found on chinese.cn.
The other notices phrase age as a state rather than a date. The Chinese Government Scholarship guide ties it to the moment of application — "under the age of 25 when applying for an undergraduate program" — and the China Link notice does the same ("Be under 45 applying for general scholars"). The Youth of Excellence, MOFCOM, ASEAN-China Young Leaders and Silk Road notices state an age without giving any reference date in the wording published on those pages.
What each notice says about its own cycle
The pages differ a great deal on dating, so it is worth reading the age limit next to the cycle it belongs to.
- Chinese Government Scholarship guide. The page carries no publication date and no academic year.
- Youth of Excellence Scheme of China. The notice is for the 2026 intake, with an online application deadline of 23:59 on 31 March 2026 (GMT+8). That date has passed; no notice for a following intake had appeared on the page when it was checked.
- MOFCOM Scholarship–CSC Program. No academic year and no deadline date; the guide tells applicants to consult the application receiving authority for the deadline of each year.
- ASEAN-China Young Leaders Scholarship. No application deadline date. The focal point list on the page is headed "As of 2026".
- Chinese Trade Unions Silk Road Scholarship. No academic year and no deadline date.
- China Link (2026). The programme runs in 2026, funding lasts 1–12 months, and scholars must start study in China no later than 31 August 2027. The CSC application portal is described as open to applicants all year round; host universities must submit nomination lists at least two months before arrival.
- International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship 2025. Dated January 2025, for programmes starting between July 2025 and March 2026.
Age is one line of eligibility, not the whole test
Every notice here pairs its age limit with other conditions, and those conditions vary by programme. The Youth of Excellence Scheme asks for a bachelor's degree or higher, at least three years of work experience and a place in one of four professional categories. The MOFCOM guide asks for at least three years of working experience, a bachelor's degree for a master's programme or a master's degree for a doctoral one, and English at a level equivalent to IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80 or above. The Silk Road scholarship asks for at least a high school certificate and at least one year of work experience. China Link requires applicants to be registered as a full-time student or employed as full-time academic staff at one of CSC's foreign partner universities. None of these notices states or estimates how many applicants receive an award.
Questions people ask
Is 40 too old for a master's degree in China?
For the Chinese Government Scholarship master's category, yes: its guide sets the limit at under 35. Other programmes that fund master's study set 45 instead — the Youth of Excellence Scheme, the MOFCOM–CSC Program and the ASEAN-China Young Leaders Scholarship, which asks for an undergraduate degree and under 45 for a master's place.
Am I over the limit at 46?
For most of these programmes, yes, because 46 is above 45. The two categories that still fit are the Chinese Government Scholarship senior scholar programme and the China Link senior scholar category, both of which allow under 50 — and both carry their own extra conditions: the CGS route requires a master's degree or a post at associate professor level or above, and China Link's senior scholars are current PhD candidates or faculty at a partner university.
Does the age limit have a cut-off date?
Only the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship guidelines give one: 1 September 2025, for the 2025 cycle. The Chinese Government Scholarship guide and the China Link notice tie the age to the point of applying. The remaining notices state an age without naming a date on which it is measured.
Can the age limit be extended?
The International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship 2025 guidelines say the maximum age limit for in-service Chinese teachers may be extended to 45. None of the other notices in this comparison mentions an extension or a waiver.
